Set your brand, sites and rivals

SetupUpdated

In Setup, Brands (titled You and your rivals), you mark which brand is yours, add its other names and sites, and choose which rivals to track. A change takes effect from the next reading, and past weeks stay as they were measured.

What is on the Brands page? #

The Brands page has three tabs, each with its own address.

Share of voice is worked out across the brands you track, so adding or removing a rival changes it.

When does a change start to count? #

A change counts from the next reading, the weekly measurement described in When readings happen. The page line says "A change counts from the next reading", and each confirmation dialog repeats it with the date. Past weeks are not rewritten: "Past weeks keep the figures already counted."

This holds for adding and removing names, sites and rivals, and for deciding found sites and names. A rival you stop tracking, then track again later, starts afresh and does not bring back its earlier history.

Mark which brand is yours #

On the You tab, the card Which brand is yours lets you choose a brand or type one. Until a brand is marked as yours, nothing can be worked out: your Mention rate, Share of voice and place are all measured against it.

If two brands are marked as yours, the tab says "2 brands are marked as yours". Figures use the first one, which is labelled "(figures use this one)". Press This one is mine on the right one. If they read the same, rename one first, with Rename.

Add other names for your brand #

In the card Names that count as you, type a name in the box Another name and press Add name. The card lists your brand name, then any other names.

An answer that uses one of these names counts as naming you. Matching is on whole words and ignores capitals, so a name that already contains your brand name is counted already. Skip names that are ordinary words, because they match writing about something else.

A name can be up to 255 characters. It cannot contain a quote mark, an apostrophe, a backslash, a control character or the character |.

Rename your brand #

Press Rename beside your brand name, type the new name and press Save name. The old name is kept as another name, so what was counted under it goes on counting. The form says so: "Tessera keeps counting, as another name."

If another brand already uses the old name as one of its other names, the rename hands that name over to the other brand, and only an admin can do that.

Stop counting an other name #

Admins press Remove beside the name. A dialog asks "Stop counting "Tessera Cloud"?" and says what changes: "This changes your mention rate from" the next reading's date. An answer that says that name and never Tessera stops counting as naming you.

Choose Keep counting it to cancel, or Stop counting "Tessera Cloud" to confirm. Past weeks are kept, and you can add the name again at any time. Members do not see Remove.

Accept or decline names the answers used #

Press Add name to count a name as you, or Not this one to never be offered it again. Under Waiting for you, BotSay offers names an engine used that would not count as you today, with a line such as "ChatGPT used this name in 6 answers we already hold."

These offers are different from Names found in answers. An offer is a possible other name for a brand you already track. A found name is a brand you do not track.

Add and remove your sites #

In the card Sites that count as yours, press Edit the list, type a web address in the box (for example docs.tessera.example), press Add site, then Done. The card lists each site with a count.

Each host is listed on its own. Adding tessera.example does not add docs.tessera.example. A link to a site on your list counts toward Your pages cited.

Admins see Remove beside each site while editing. The dialog Remove docs.tessera.example? says "This changes Your pages cited" from the next reading, that links to it will count as somebody else's, and that you can add it again at any time. Choose Keep it or Remove docs.tessera.example.

Decide sites BotSay found #

Under Waiting for you, a group reads "The answers cite 4 more hosts under tessera.example". Until you decide, links to them do not count toward Your pages cited.

For one host the buttons are It is mine and Not mine. Every host found under one domain waits as one decision, so 200 customer addresses are one decision, not 200. If your customers get their own address under your domain, choose Let me choose and add only the hosts that are yours. A decision covers the hosts listed when you press it, and a host found later asks again.

What is Counted for nobody? #

Counted for nobody is a section that appears when a site cannot be counted for anyone. There are two causes.

What if a cited site under my domain is not on my list? #

Links to it count as somebody else's until you add it. Under Waiting for you, an item reads "2 cited sites under your domains are not on your list" (or "1 cited site under your domain is not on your list").

Each host shows "Under tessera.example, which is yours." Press Add on each host you own. There is nothing to decline: a host leaves the item only by being added.

Read the Rivals tab #

The Rivals tab is a table with five columns: Rival, Other names, Sites, To decide and Mention rate. The Mention rate is the figure Standing prints for that brand, and reads "not measured" where there is none.

Chips filter it: All with a count, No site listed with a count and Something to decide with a count. Find a rival searches names and other names. Select a row to open a panel for that rival. It shows why it is tracked if it was suggested at setup, for example "Suggested when you set up: named by ChatGPT and Claude.", then names, sites and decisions, laid out as for your own brand.

A note says how many rivals have no site: "2 rivals have no site listed, so their pages count as ordinary sites." Listing a rival's websites lets Where to get in tell its pages apart, as Find pages to get your brand onto explains.

Add a rival #

Press Add a rival, type its name and press Add a rival again. Members and admins can add.

The dialog says "It counts from the next reading, and share of voice is then worked out across one more brand." The new rival opens in the panel, ready for its other names and sites. If the name matches one you already track, you see, for example, "Novaly is already tracked".

Stop tracking a rival #

Admins open the rival and press Stop tracking Novaly at the foot of its panel. The dialog Stop tracking Novaly? says "This changes your numbers from" the next reading's date.

It also says that Share of voice is worked out across the brands you track, so yours rises, for example "from 18.2% to about 21.0%", without anything real changing, and Novaly leaves your standings. It gives the figures only when every tracked brand has a share this week.

Choose Keep tracking to cancel, or Stop tracking Novaly to confirm. Past weeks keep the figures already counted.

Suggest rivals #

Press Suggest rivals beside Add a rival. The page says "Each one is a suggestion, not a measurement. Nothing is tracked until you accept it." Each row names a rival, with Accept and Discard, and says it was suggested from your homepage and what AI engines named in their answers.

An admin presses Suggest rivals (Suggest more rivals once some are waiting) and decides each row. Your workspace can ask for three batches a day. Members see the suggestions and the note "An admin decides each of these. Nothing changes until they do." Choose Done, back to Rivals to leave.

What is on the Names found in answers tab? #

The tab reads "Brand names the engines mentioned that you do not track. Most are background. A few matter." Four numbers act as piles you can open.

Decide a found name #

Press Track as a rival or Set aside on a row. On the first and third piles, each row shows the name, In answers (for example "36 of 419") and Against your set (for example "More than 3 of your 6 rivals"). Tick several rows to decide them together.

More opens what kind of name BotSay thinks it is, with its confidence (Fairly sure, Possibly or A guess) and when it was first seen. There you can correct the spelling in Written as before tracking, or press Add as another name to add it to a brand you track. A name on the set aside pile has Bring back.

Decide a name that looks like a brand you track #

Under may be a brand you already track, choose Same brand, Set aside or Track as its own on each row. Deciding these stops one brand's numbers being split in two.

Each row reads, for example, '"Tessera Cloud" looks like Tessera.' Same brand adds it as another name for the brand it resembles. Track as its own makes it a separate rival under the name it was found with.

Who can do what on this page? #

Admins and members can mark your brand, add and rename names, add sites, add rivals, decide found sites, decide offered names, and decide found names.

Only admins can remove an other name, remove a site, stop tracking a rival, and accept or discard suggested rivals.

Tessera, Novaly, Pinefield, Kestrel Pay and Orbita are invented brands, used here as examples.
